ARCHIVE MINI-REVIEW
CRIMSON GOLD
Directed & edited by Jafar Panahi
Screenplay by Abbas Kiarostami
2-1/2 stars [Talaye Sorgh/(2003)Iran/Wellspring] - (1 hr. 35 min.)
Review:
Abbas Kiarostami ("Ten") is rarely interested in well-made plotlines, but this film is his most accessible attempt at telling a cohesive story.
Hussein is a large Iranian man who is seen robbing a store at the beginning of the film. Action then flashes back to the time period leading up to this criminal action and details Hussein'ss sincere love for his fiance and his desire to get her a proper ring for their wedding.
Like many Arabic men, though poor, Hussein is extremely proud and when he feels belittled by the jeweler he decides to get some "payback" and recruits his friend Ali to aid in this attempt.
Can't really say much more without spoiling it, but if you haven't seen a Kiarastami film yet, this one would be a good introduction to the legendary Iranian writer-director's work (even though Jafar Panahi directed the script by Kiarostami).
Characters/Cast
Hussein - Hussein Emadeddin
Ali - Kamyar Sheissi
With: Azita Rayeji, Shahram Vaziri, Pourang Nakhael
